The power of fascia – why this connective tissue matters so much

During treatments, you’ll often hear me say: “I’m working on your fascia now.” And usually the first question is: “What’s fascia?” The simplest way to explain it is this: fascia is a thin but strong layer of connective tissue that wraps through your entire body – around muscles, organs, and even just under the skin. Think of it as an internal web that ties everything together.

Why fascia matters

Fascia isn’t just “packing material” inside your body – it’s living, sensitive tissue full of nerve endings. When it becomes tight or stuck, it can cause pain. It also stops your muscles from moving freely, and in some cases it can even interfere with how your organs function.

How it affects your whole body

Fascia works like a stretchy net. If one part of it pulls tight, the whole structure is affected. Imagine tugging the side of your T-shirt – the fabric shifts across your whole upper body. That’s how your fascia works too: an ankle injury can end up creating tension all the way up in your neck.

What happens on the treatment table

When I’m treating fascia, the changes aren’t always felt right where I touch. I might be working on your back, and suddenly your chest feels easier to expand with each breath. That’s because fascia links everything – a release in one area can free up something much further away.
